4 large potatoes
1tsp smoked paprika (optional)
1tsp garlic powder (optional)
1tsp salt (optional)
1tsp pepper (optional)
2tbsp corn starch
250ml vegetable oil
Peel and chop your potatoes into cubes, parboil until they fall off of a knife and drain before putting them back in the pot for about 5-10 minutes until they dry off
Put the potatoes through a ricer or mash them with a fork. Then season with your choice of seasoning (Ara used salt, pepper, garlic powder and smoked paprika). After this, add corn starch and breadcrumbs and mash and knead with your hands until it’s a soft but not sticky ball
Roll the mixture out (not too thin) and form the faces with something round (cookie cutter, drinking glass etc.) If you have any offcuts, make a ball and roll out again so that you don’t waste any. Use chopsticks to make the eyes and a spoon to give the faces their smiles (or frowns if you’re feeling pessimistic)
Heat the vegetable oil in a pot of a pan and, once it’s hot, fry the smileys and serve with whatever nostalgic treats your heart desires!
